Concrete Ring Interceptor Tank Renovation

Introduction

UCL Ltd was contracted to renovate a concrete ring interceptor tank that had suffered significant substrate degradation and exposed reinforcement bar. The structure required urgent remedial works to restore structural integrity and provide long-term chemical resistance, whilst minimising operational downtime within a live water treatment environment.

Our Solution

The tank was pumped down to its lower limits and all high-level inlets were capped. The lowest inlet remained open to prevent hydraulic overload further downstream. High-pressure water jetting (HPWJ) at 20,000 psi using a rotary jetting head was deployed to remove all weak and degraded concrete, exposing sound substrate and any compromised reinforcement bar. Following inspection, rebar and substrate losses were confirmed within acceptable limits. The surface was then treated with an acid etch followed by an antimicrobial wash to neutralise bacteria and ensure optimum bond integrity. A 6 mm application of Ultracoat pure epoxy coating system was then spray-applied to the full internal surface area, providing a seamless, chemical-resistant lining compliant with potable water standards.

Key Benefits

  • Full works completed within a single 14-hour shift (06:00–20:00), minimising service disruption
  • 20,000 psi HPWJ ensured thorough substrate preparation without mechanical damage to sound concrete
  • Antimicrobial pre-treatment eliminated biological contamination risk prior to coating application
  • 6 mm Ultracoat epoxy system delivers long-term chemical and abrasion resistance
  • Lowest inlet maintained live throughout, preventing upstream hydraulic issues
  • Tank returned to service same day — zero extended outage

Conclusion

The interceptor tank was fully renovated and returned to service within a single working day. This project demonstrates UCL Ltd's capability to deliver complex tank lining works within live water treatment infrastructure under strict operational and environmental constraints.
